What is MDF - and Why Has It Been So Popular?

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is a smooth, engineered wood product that takes paint beautifully. For dry, well-ventilated rooms - lounges, bedrooms and dining rooms - it has been the go-to choice for painted shutters for decades, offering a clean, contemporary finish at an attractive price.

Where MDF needs a little more care is in moisture-prone rooms - kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and conservatories. Over time, repeated exposure to steam and humidity can cause the painted surface to lift, especially around the lower slats. It’s for those environments in particular that we now recommend our composite range.
