What is MDF - and Why Was It Popular?

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is a man-made material often used in budget furniture and shutters. It's made from wood fibres and resin, and while it can be cost-effective, it has a major drawback: it’s highly vulnerable to moisture.

In the UK, where average humidity levels hover around 50% - and higher in kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms - this is a serious concern. MDF absorbs moisture over time, which leads to swelling, warping, peeling, and eventual disintegration of the outer coating.
